Durrell-katalógus

Édesapám állatszeretete meghatározta az egész családunk életét. Gyerekkorunkban többször meglepett bennünket mezei nyúllal, kiscsibével és más kis élőlényekkel, amelyeket azután a csöpp panellakásunk negyedik emeletén nevelgettünk. A szüleim nyugdíjas éveikre kertes házba költöztek, ahol édesapám szenvedélye végleg kiteljesedhetett: az évek folyamán több ezer állat fordult meg a keze alatt, jelenleg 157 példányról gondoskodnak.
Eleinte nem értettem ezt a gyűjtőszenvedélyt, a madárházak, a kis kunyhók szaporodását. Azt láttam, hogy ez az egész megnehezíti a családi együttléteket, megkeseríti édesanyám életét is, mert nem tudják elhagyni a házat: teher, rabság a sok állat. Időbe telt, mire megértettem, milyen csodálatos az, amit édesapám az ösztönei hatására csinál. Az öregedéssel az ember egyre magányosabb lesz, van, aki utazgat, könyvet ír, vagy kártyapartikra jár, más ruhákat varr, süt, főz, hiszen mindenképpen szükséges valami, amivel el tudja foglalni magát ebben a korban. Édesapám úgy döntött, kisállatokkal fog törődni. Mára hálával gondolok rájuk, mert örömet szereznek édesapámnak, emellett segítenek neki kapcsolatot teremteni az unokáival is, akik rengeteget játszhatnak az állatokkal, miközben megtanulnak gondoskodni is róluk. Ezzel a hálaérzettel telítődve készítettem a sorozatomat, mindannyiuk közreműködésével, olyan vidám helyzeteket teremtve, mint amilyenekről Gerald Durrell Családom és egyéb állatfajták című könyvében is olvastam.

My father's love for animals defined the life of our whole family. When we were children, he often surprised us with leverets, chicks, and other small critters, which we then raised in our tiny prefab flat on the fifth floor. Once my parents retired, they moved into a house with a garden where my father’s passion could get fully fledged – over the years, they have taken care of thousands of animals, and there are 157 animals in their care at the moment.
In the beginning, I didn't understand his collecting craze as birdhouses and little shacks kept on multiplying. I felt that all that burdened the union of our family and also made my mother’s life difficult because they couldn’t leave the house – the menagerie of animals was a yoke, a manacle on them. It took time for me to understand how wonderful what my father was doing following his instincts. Growing old, people are getting lonely; some start to travel, write books, play cards; others make clothes, or bake and cook. At older ages, everybody needs something to keep them occupied. My father decided to take care of small animals. By today, I became grateful for the beasties, because I see that they bring joy to my father’s life, and they also help him bond with his grandchildren, who play a lot with the animals and also learn to take care of them. I made my series full of this feeling of gratitude, with the cooperation of all of them, creating gleeful situations akin to those that I read in Gerald Durrell’s book My Family and Other Animals.
